Would you like to work closely with injured song birds, waterfowl, bunnies, opossums and learn to care for them, and even have the opportunity to return some of them back into the wild? Carolina Wildlife Care’s interns participate in almost all aspects of the rehabilitation process, from admission through release. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a real hands-on learning experience working with wildlife. Interns will acquire skills that will better prepare them for a career working with animals.
Activities include:
- Preparing food/diets for both orphans and recovering animals
- Administering medications and fluids
- Safe handling and restraint of wildlife while treatments are performed
- Admitting incoming patients and performing initial examination on animals
- Cleaning and watering of kennels, cages, and aviaries
- Taking calls and animals from the public and going out on animal rescues
- Releasing rehabilitated wildlife for releases back into the wild.
- The satisfaction of saving the lives of hundreds of wild animals
- Three internship sessions available.
Applicants must have two years of college experience and preference is given to those majoring in biology, pre-vet, or a science related field. Applicants must be self-motivated with a sincere interest in working with wildlife and able to handle a demanding workload. Attention to detail, punctuality, initiative, a strong work ethic and a desire to learn are required. Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs and work in all types of outdoor conditions.
Three sessions are available for consideration.
- Session 1: May 11th – July 31st (20 hrs/12 wks, 4 positions, Deadline April 1st, 2009)
- Session 2: June 1st – July 24th (30 hrs/ 8 wks, 4 positions, Deadline April 1st, 2009)
- Session 3: August 23rd - Nov 1st (15 hrs/10 wks, 2 positions, Deadline July 15th, 2009)
A minimum commitment of 240 hours total over an 8 to 12 week period is required during the summer months. Hours include some evenings and weekends. Successful interns are self-motivated, driven, and able to perform in a fast-paced environment. Past interns have received offer for continued employment. Candidates must provide own transportation. Wildlife Education Interns
Carolina Wildlife Care is preparing for another great summer of Camp WILD Things. Wildlife Education Interns will be involved in every aspect of camp, from handling education animals to teaching campers about conservation. They will also participate in the everyday happenings of the education team.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching and assisting with summer camp activities
- Planning and presenting education programs
- Handling and teaching campers about education animals
- Supervising breaks, snack times, etc.
- Assisting education staff as needed
- Internship begins June 8th, 2009
Candidates must have completed at least their freshman year of college. College graduates are welcome to apply. Candidates should be flexible, friendly and comfortable spending their days outdoors. A successful candidate will enjoy children, be committed, and posses excellent communication and organizational skills. Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and deal with dynamic situations. Candidates must provide own transportation. No housing available. Must be CPR/first aid certified by start date.
A minimum commitment of 20 hours per week (160 hours total) over an 8 week period is required. The internship will run June 8th- July 24th, 2009. Only serious applicants need to apply.
